Volunteering Centre

The Institute of Art’s Volunteer Coordinator Samantha Beck and the Board of Trustees invite you to join our volunteer staff, there are many roles available watch the video or continue reading to find a position for you.

Rewarding – Challenging – Volunteering – Fun

The Volunteering Centre’s role is leading the development and sustainability of the United Artists projects. The volunteer staff ensure that the United Artists continually meets the five pledges:

1. identify and explore issues surrounding the Arts;
2. explore and develop new ideas and solutions to problems;
3. anticipate political and social developments and the likely consequences for the Arts;
4. develop and trial new ways of working that impact positively on the Arts and Arts education.
5. work with our partners to lead significant development and change in the sector.

Volunteering may be an outlet for your natural talents, a great way to increase your chances of getting your dream job when you leave Education, or simply a handy way to meet new friends.

Whichever the case, the United Artists Volunteering Centre can help you fulfil your expectations and make the most out of your volunteering experience!

The Chelmsford volunteer centre has Volunteering Coordinators that are here to assist you while you are part of the UA staff and to provide you with support at every step of the way. Available positions are:

United Artists Online Moderator (content) [Job 1]	We are looking for motivated, responsible people, who are interested in the Arts and/or Education.
UA Website Admin[Job 2]	Website admin position based in Chelmsford, we are looking for people with a computer science background or history with website development, a focus on community based VLE’s is advantageous.
Fundraiser[Job 3]	We are looking for self-motivated Fundraisers who are passionate about the work of the UA IOA, people who can commit to raising vital funds for our work. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who are willing to take part in and are able to raise awareness of local and national fundraising opportunities. These include all sizes of local and challenge events from fetes, craft sales or coffee mornings to marathons, continental cycling and trekking.
UA Ambassador[Job 4]	We need outgoing and enthusiastic people to inspire others and help raise vital funds in their community. Ambassadors give presentations to schools, churches and clubs and tell people how they can help the UA IOA. They may also have a stand at a local event or organise some fundraising themselves.
Resource Developer[Job 5]	Developer position based in Chelmsford; we are looking for committed people to develop resources for learning artistic and creative skills. We are developing educational programmes and differentiated lesson plans for learners aged 5 to 21.
Research Assistant[Job 6]	Research position based in Chelmsford, RA’s will be expected to complete a research proposal. Details of the research will be provided on appointment, are based around the Arts in Education.
Volunteer Coordinator[Job 7]	We are also looking for committed people to take on the senior volunteering role of Regional Co-ordinator in a number of locations across the country. This role involves leading a team of Ambassadors, providing support and encouragement to them; helping to interview new volunteers; organising regional meetings; and liaising with staff at Head Office to ensure everyone gets the support they need.
Trustee[Job 8]	The most executive position, appointed under clause G of the UA IOA’s constitution. Up to 5 Trustee’s can be appointed at the annual general meeting by majority vote of the executive committee; you must have a voting membership to be considered for this post (see Membership).

You can combine more than one of the volunteer opportunities available (e.g. Job 3 & Job 4).

I started on my homework
but my pen ran out of ink.
My hamster ate my homework.
My computer’s on the blink.

I accidentally dropped it
in the soup my mom was cooking.
My brother flushed it down the toilet
when I wasn’t looking.

My mother ran my homework
through the washer and the dryer.
An airplane crashed into our house.
My homework caught on fire.

Tornadoes blew my notes away.
Volcanoes struck our town.
My notes were taken hostage
by an evil killer clown.

Some aliens abducted me.
I had a shark attack.
A pirate swiped my homework
and refused to give it back.

I worked on these excuses
so darned long my teacher said,
“I think you’ll find it’s easier
to do the work instead.”

My teacher took my iPod.
She said they had a rule;
I couldn’t bring it into class
or even to the school.

She said she would return it;
I’d have it back that day.
But then she tried my headphones on
and gave a click on Play.

She looked a little startled,
but after just a while
she made sure we were occupied
and cracked a wicked smile.

Her body started swaying.
Her toes began to tap.
She started grooving in her seat
and rocking to the rap.

My teacher said she changed her mind.
She thinks it’s now okay
to bring my iPod into class.
She takes it every day.

My Puppy Punched Me In the Eye

My puppy punched me in the eye.
My rabbit whacked my ear.
My ferret gave a frightful cry
and roundhouse kicked my rear.

My lizard flipped me upside down.
My kitten kicked my head.
My hamster slammed me to the ground
and left me nearly dead.

So my advice? Avoid regrets;
no matter what you do,
don’t ever let your family pets
take lessons in kung fu.

Floyd the Coin Collector

I’m Floyd, the coin collector.
It’s coins that I collect.
I’m really not too finicky
with which ones I select.

I like collecting pennies;
they’re all I get sometimes.
But often I get nickels, too,
and frequently it’s dimes.

I’ll gladly keep a dollar coin,
a quarter, or a pound.
I’d even save a rupee
or a ruble that I found.

A euro here, a guilder there,
a peso or a franc;
I’ll happily collect them all
and put them in the bank.

My hobby is a simple one;
it’s not the least bit strange.
And all you have to do to help
is give me all your change.

A Funny Art Poem for Kids

I’m Arthur. I’m an artist,
and I love to paint and draw.
I paint portraits on my forehead.
I draw landscapes on my jaw.

There’s nothing quite as fun
as making sketches on my skin,
so I color on my elbows
and I scribble on my chin.

I’m known for doing doodles
on my fingers and my toes,
and my belly and my back are brushed
with beautiful tableaus.

I hope you’ll come and see me
to appreciate my scrawls.
I am always in museums
where I hang upon the walls.

Just find the guy with ink and paint
on every body part.
Or, instead, just ask for me by name;
my friends all call me “Art.”

When Freddie Had Spaghetti

When Freddie had spaghetti
it was something of a sight.
He would spin it with his fingers.
He would whip it left and right.

He would swing it in a circle.
He would toss it in the air.
He would flip it on his forehead.
He would wear it in his hair.

He would put it in his pockets.
He would stuff it in his socks.
He would cram it into cabinets.
He would squash it onto clocks.

He would drape it on the table.
He would pour it on the floor.
He would stick it to the windows,
and then ask to have some more.

He would play with it all morning,
through the afternoon, and night,
but he didn’t like the taste
so Freddie never ate a bite.

My Puppy Makes Pizza

My puppy makes pizza.
He bakes every day
In chef hat and apron
he’s quite the gourmet.
He’ll roll out some dough
and he’ll give it a toss,
then spread on a generous
topping of sauce.
He’ll heap it with cheeses
and mountains of meat,
but, still, it’s not something
you’d probably eat.
For though he makes pizza
with obvious flair,
it all ends up covered
with slobber and hair.
